And the processing computer doesn't have to use a mouse or keyboard or display, all potential causes of noise susceptible to travel along the file-playback system together with the data. So I am now using my old laptop from the sofa connected to the router with a long Cat5 to control the Mac mini which even though it's only an entry level 2018 i3 can cope with the file processing with aplomb. The former has the advantage of on-board trackpad, keyboard and display screen and I had more or less decided to get one when someone at CA/AS suggested that I could run a Mac mini headless (no display), mouse-less and keyboard-less by using Apple Screen Sharing. I am wedded to iTunes, still find it the best browser for Mac, so my first though was to get either a more recent MacBook Pro or a Mac mini. ![]() Even though the 2012 i7 laptop processor was able to cope with the upconversion the extra stress produced an increase in temperature which meant that the fans were now spinning at a very audible speed. The computer and the NUC are connected to the router using ethernet.īut DSD256 also created another problem. My playback system consists of a playback computer which upconverts the AIFF files to DSD256 and feeds a small endpoint/buffer NUC which is connected to the DAC over USB. And, because I am renting and can't be laying ethernet cable around the place, I replaced the NAS with a silent SSD in a USB housing that is now connected to the playback computer. First I tried an old BT Hub that I had lying around but it couldn't cope with the strain so I decided to get a Linksys gigabyte wired router which works flawlessly. To deal with the drop outs I decided to create a local wired network for digital audio playback. ![]() I was using wireless and was streaming locally from a NAS positioned elsewhere in the house to avoid the mechanical noise, but the new DAC accepts DSD256 and that was too much for the wireless which relies on a cheap mesh network and is under a bit of pressure because children nowadays are online all the time, streaming Spotify, watching Netflix and Youtube or gaming. ![]() A recent change of DAC has prompted a massive revolution in my file-playback system.
